GMC registration after PLAB: a step-by-step guide

8 June 2026 2 min readLast reviewed 8 June 2026

Passing PLAB 2 clears the clinical hurdle, but you still need to be registered with the General Medical Council before you can work as a doctor in the UK. Knowing the steps in advance, and preparing your documents early, makes this stage far less stressful.

Step 1: Confirm you meet the requirements

You will generally need a primary medical qualification the GMC accepts, evidence of your knowledge of English, and a pass in both parts of PLAB. The authoritative, up-to-date checklist is on the GMC website — always confirm the current requirements there.

Step 2: Apply online through GMC Online

Registration applications are made through your GMC Online account. You apply for registration with a licence to practise, which is what allows you to work and prescribe.

Step 3: Identity and document checks

You will need to verify your identity (usually at an in-person check) and provide evidence of your qualifications and fitness to practise. Gather originals and certified copies early, as document delays are the commonest cause of hold-ups.

Step 4: Plan for timelines

  • Start gathering documents before your results, so you are ready.
  • Book the identity check as soon as you can.
  • Allow several weeks for the process and avoid committing to a job start date too tightly.

After registration

With registration and a licence to practise, most IMGs look for their first NHS post. The consultation habits PLAB 2 builds carry straight over into NHS clinical work. See our guides on the full IMG route to UK practice and finding your first NHS job.
