Breaking the news of a lifelong condition tests structured, compassionate communication. The examiner wants you to deliver the news clearly, allow the reaction, and set realistic, hopeful next steps.
How to structure it
- Find out what the patient already understands.
- Give a warning shot, then the news simply and clearly.
- Pause and respond to their reaction with empathy.
- Explain the condition and lifelong insulin in plain terms, in small chunks.
- Address the impact on their life and arrange specialist and nurse follow-up.
Common pitfalls
- Overwhelming the patient with information after the news.
- Glossing over the emotional impact.
- Failing to convey realistic optimism and support.
Examiners reward a warning shot, space for emotion, chunked explanation and a supportive, realistic plan.
