Breaking bad news

Sensitively delivering information that changes a patient’s view of their future, ideally using a structure such as SPIKES and going at the patient’s pace.

Give a warning shot, deliver information in small chunks, pause for emotion, and check understanding. Avoid overloading the patient or jumping straight to management.
