Autonomy

The principle that a patient with capacity has the right to make their own decisions about their care, even if others disagree with them.

Respecting autonomy means a capacitous patient can refuse treatment. Demonstrating that you accept an informed refusal — while ensuring they understand the consequences — is often the key to an ethics station.
