Advance statement

A written or verbal statement of a person’s wishes, preferences, and values to guide future care. Unlike an advance decision, it is not legally binding but must be considered.

Distinguishing an advance statement (preferences) from an advance decision (a legally binding refusal) is a common point of confusion that ethics stations probe.
