How to pass PLAB 2: a structured 8-week study plan
Passing PLAB 2 is less about cramming facts and more about rehearsing a calm, structured consultation until it becomes second nature. Eight weeks of consistent, focused practice is enough for most well-prepared candidates. Here is a plan you can adapt to your own exam date.
Weeks 1–2: Learn the format and build a structure
Start by understanding the circuit and the three marking domains. Then build a consultation structure you can use in any station — a reliable opening, a way to explore the presenting complaint, a habit of checking ideas, concerns and expectations, and a clear safety-net to close. Do a few low-pressure practice stations to get used to speaking out loud against the clock.
Weeks 3–4: Breadth across station types
Now widen your range. Work deliberately through every station type — history taking, explanation, relatives, colleagues, teaching, breaking bad news, consent, complaints and ethics. Aim for variety rather than repetition; the goal is that no station type feels unfamiliar.
- Two to four practice stations on most days.
- Rotate the station type each session.
- Review feedback and note one specific thing to improve next time.
Weeks 5–6: Depth and difficult behaviours
Add challenge. Practise with anxious, angry, dismissive or emotional patients, and with time-pressured scenarios. This is where interpersonal marks are won or lost. Keep reviewing your feedback by domain and double down on your weakest one.
Weeks 7–8: Simulate exam day and taper
In the final fortnight, simulate the real thing: run several stations back to back under strict timing to build stamina and composure. Then taper. In the last few days, revisit your strongest stations to reinforce good habits, rest properly, and trust your preparation. Fatigue harms clinical reasoning far more than one extra late-night session helps.
The thread running through every week is the same: realistic, timed practice with structured feedback. If you can practise stations on demand and see exactly which domain to improve, eight weeks is plenty. ZWIP gives you unlimited AI patient consultations and PLAB 2 feedback so you can run this plan from anywhere.
